Description

When the ocean was churned, the gods and the asuras pulled for a thousand years and everything that came up was fought over. The poison. The moon. The nectar. And somewhere in that list, a tree.

The Kalpavriksha grants whatever is asked of it. That is the entire description, and it is the reason the tree turns up again and again across Indian art, carved into temple walls and painted into miniatures, long after the story that produced it has been forgotten.

What the tradition does with it is more interesting than the wish granting. Indra took it to his heaven. It was never meant to sit in one house, because a thing that gives without limit is not supposed to be owned.

This Kalpavriksha is cast in solid brass and finished by hand by expert artisans. It sits well outside a mandir as easily as inside one, on a desk, a console table, or a shelf. One of the few pieces here that works as a gift for someone whose taste you know better than their beliefs.

KEY DETAILS
